Communications & Document Sharing

See Core Concepts for the custody and lifecycle context this page assumes, Investors & Onboarding for the fund-manager side of an individual investor's Communications and Documents tabs, and Investor Portal — Investor Experience for the investor's own Communications and Data-Room pages.

Canonical route(s) unconfirmed

Not verified against any actual route on either the fund-manager or investor side.

This is one feature with two faces — a fund manager's outbound/inbound view, and an investor's inbound/outbound view of the same underlying messages and documents.

Messaging

Model: threaded, email-style — not one continuous ongoing conversation, and not one isolated item per message. There are multiple distinct threads, each started fresh (e.g. via a fund manager's or investor's "New Message"). Replying to a message keeps the reply attached to that same thread — it doesn't spin off a new one.

Layout: an email-style inbox, not a live chat screen. A list of threads sits on the left; selecting one opens a panel on the right showing that thread's full back-and-forth.

Bulk vs. targeted send — not detailed here

Earlier product scoping referenced a fund-manager "Communications hub" with separate Messages and Statements sections, implying bulk-to-all-investors sending is a real capability, not just one-to-one messages. This page doesn't yet detail that compose flow (recipient selection, bulk vs. targeted). Needs a pass once confirmed.

Document Sharing

Two distinct flows between a fund manager and an investor, not one undifferentiated list — same model on both sides:

  1. Fund manager → investor, informational. Reports, statements, fact sheets. Arrives as-is, nothing required back.
  2. Fund manager → investor, action required. Something the manager needs back — e.g. a document requiring signature (a transfer-of-funds authorization, an address-change confirmation). Carries an Action Required category and status, distinct from flow 1, and surfaces as a Pending Action on the investor's Dashboard.

Separately, the investor can send a document to the fund manager on their own initiative, via a "Send a document" action — not a large, default-open upload dropzone; a secondary action. Before submitting, a draft upload can be discarded. Once a document is actually sent, in either direction, it is never deleted.

Categories: Monthly Report, Statement, Fact Sheet, Action Required, Investor Submission, Other.

Attribution: whether a document was sent to all investors in bulk or targeted specifically to one investor is fund-manager-side information only — the investor never sees or needs to know which.

Where each side sees this:

  • Fund manager: the Individual Investor Profile's Documents tab — uploaded documents (subscription agreement, manager-requested supporting docs) plus anything the manager sends the investor (statements, tax documents), with type, status, and last-updated columns.
  • Investor: their own Data-Room page — chronological, with category, which fund it belongs to (or "General"), date, and status.

"Statements" section — relationship to Data-Room unconfirmed

Earlier product scoping described a fund-manager Communications hub with a distinct "Statements" section, separate from Messages. Not yet confirmed whether fund-manager-issued statements are the same mechanism as an informational Data-Room document (just filtered to the Statement category), or a genuinely separate distribution feature. Needs a pass to resolve before this page can be called complete.

Can a document attach to a message thread?

Not yet confirmed whether a message can carry a document attachment directly, or whether documents only ever move through the separate Data-Room / Documents flow described above, with messages staying text-only.

Revision History

VersionDateChange
1.02026-09-14Initial draft, consolidating the messaging and document-sharing model already decided across Investors & Onboarding (fund-manager side) and Investor Experience (investor side) into one dedicated page. Three items flagged as open: bulk-vs-targeted message compose flow, the relationship between a fund-manager "Statements" section and Data-Room, and whether messages can carry document attachments.
